Southern Company is one of the largest generators of electricity in the nation, serving both regulated and competitive markets across the southeastern United States. They also sell power in the wholesale market and transmit wholesale power for other providers. The company's four electric utilities include Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, and Mississippi Power, and serve more than 4.4 million retail customers. Other major subsidiaries and business units of Southern Company include Southern Nuclear, SouthernLINC Wireless, and Southern Telecom.
The company originated in the 1920's when Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, and Mississippi Power became an interconnected system under a holding company known as Southeastern Power & Light. The same four companies later integrated under a new holding company, Southern Company, and the company moved to Georgia in 1950.
In addition to Southern Company's Allen Plaza headquarters, the company maintains subsidiary offices in metro atlanta, including Georgia Power headquarters on Ralph McGill Blvd., and the SouthernLINC Wireless headquarters in the Central Perimeter. The company also operates metro area generating stations in Carrollton, Cartersville, Newnan, Roswell, and Smyrna.
